Building a book-first website for a growing LitRPG publisher
Project Summary
Portal Books, a fast-growing LitRPG publisher, needed a website that matched the professionalism of the authors and business partners it works with — replacing a Squarespace site that was starting to show its age at exactly the moment new authors and partners were sizing the company up. With a fixed deadline ahead of a major LitRPG convention, the rebuild also had to move fast without cutting corners.
Ingot was brought on to design and build a new WordPress site structured around Portal’s three core audiences: readers, authors, and business partners. Rather than a single generic homepage, the site was architected so each audience finds what it needs immediately — covers and series for readers, a clear editorial process for prospective authors, and a scannable catalogue for partners.
At the core of the build is a scalable content system spanning 20+ series and 30+ authors, supporting multiple formats per title and flagship features like Azarinth Healer on the homepage. A mega menu built for discovery routes visitors by format, series, or author in a couple of clicks, while conversion-first signup flows keep newsletter and Discord growth front and centre across the site. A dedicated submissions page reinforces Portal’s editorial partnership with authors, using clear visual hierarchy to make requirements easy to scan.
The result is a book-first, established-feeling website that lets Portal Books show up with confidence at its biggest event of the year — and gives the team a content system they can keep current themselves, long after the convention ends.
